blueberry muffins

I love blueberry muffins. I love them so much that I tend to seek out new recipes for blueberry muffins. I'm amazed that there are a lot of various recipes out there specifically for blueberry muffins. I know Alton Brown's show 'Good Eats' devoted a whole show just to blueberry muffins! It was good, did anyone see it or try his version? I think I have a stash of about 7 blueberry muffins in my freezer for backup. Crazy right? Does anyone else do that? I must eat about 2 or 3 muffins a week. When I go to Whole Foods and see there is a fresh delivery of organic blueberries, I buy 4 pints.
Well, here is the latest blueberry muffin recipe I found. This one uses a crumble topping. Nothing like a good blueberry muffin with some coffee cake crumbies on top.

How many blueberry muffin recipes have you tried?
Which was your favorite one?

Blueberry Muffins with crumbly topping
print recipe

Muffin batter:
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup white sugar
½ ts salt
2 ts baking powder
¼ cup vegetable oil
1 egg
1/3 cup whole milk
1 cup fresh blueberries

Crumb topping:
½ cup white sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup butter, melted
1 ½ ts ground cinnamon

Cook Notes:
If you like a lot of crumb topping like I do, then double the ingredients in the crumb toppings.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Grease muffin cups or line with muffin liners.
In a separate bowl combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Whisk together to fluff it all up.
In a separate bowl mix vegetable oil, the egg and milk. Combine well. Incorporate the wet with the dry. Do not over mix, only mix till just combined; it's ok to have lumps! Next fold in blueberries. Fill muffin cups right to the top, and sprinkle with crumb topping mixture.
Make the crumb topping by mixing the sugar, flour, butter, and cinnamon.
Mix with fork, and sprinkle over muffins before baking.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until done.

  1. I am so making those - I have never seen a blueberry muffin with crumbs on top! Note to self - Buy blueberries this weekend :) And I love Alton's show, and how each episode is devoted to one specific thing.

  9. I love muffins and those looks fantastic, but (and I hope you don't hate me now) I don't like blueberries. I don't know why, they've just never done it for me. I bet these muffins would be great with strawberries or raspberries though. ;)

  10. Dawn, these look amazing! I love that pop of color from the blueberries, and that crumb topping looks so tasty. I'm all for the extra topping or icing on desserts, I mean it's always the best part anyways!

  20. Blueberry muffins are my favorite and the crumb topping just make them sublime. That's the way my Grandma always made them.

Sadly, I don't have her recipe, and actually don't bake muffins nearly as often as I should.

I took a walk on the beach today to get a little vitamin D therapy. It helped alot.

  21. Hahahhaa, okay, once again I have to agree with you on the crumb topping. I think we both should come up with a recipe that involves more topping than muffin...

I went and picked a slew of blueberries last summer and have my stash in the freezer-I think some just found a home in these babies.
Oh yeah-like you, I keep blueberry muffins in the freezer at the ready-have a batch of Jordan Marsh ones in there right now....hmmmm....I think I need one.....:)

  27. Great looking muffins! It's funny you mention that they freeze well. I really like blueberry muffins straight from the freezer. I slice them into coins and eat them like cookies but still frozen.

  28. Dawn,

As usual, these look so yummy! Thank you so much for thanking me about volunteering at the cat shelter. I need to thank you too! I didn't know you did this as well? It feels so good to at least help out since I can't take them all home with me. I always feel so rewarded, in my heart, to have given in caring for all of 'em and help find good homes for each and every one. :)

    Hugs,

    Michelle

  40. Dawn,

Those have to be the very best blueberry muffins that I have ever seen!! How do you think they would ship if I packed them right? I would love to send some down to my son who is in college at the University of South Florida. Thanks so much for sharing.

  41. These look scrumptious and the crumb topping is over the top!

  42. Crumb topping anywhere makes me salivate instantly. That crunchy sweet thin layer just does it for me. Now that I took that out of my system let's discuss muffins. I love blueberry ones (who doesn't anyway?) but blueberries are not so comun here and when I do find them they're soooooooo expensive that I'm usually happy just looking at yours, so keep'em coming!

  43. These are really gorgeous!

  44. God I love blueberry muffins, and yours look freakin delicious! I love how they look with the crumble on the top. I must bookmark this to try sometime, when blueberries aren't so damn expensive! :)

  45. Okay, so I'm totally not being a dick, but I just had to tell you: that first picture is so out of proportion I was all like "Daaaammmnnn! What do plums have to do with blueberry muffins?" and then I realized it was a picture of blueberries, HA! I totally have the same dish.

ALSO, the recipe looks fab. Will be trying it soon. =)
