sushi bowl

Let's just call it delish bowl. I've seen these before on Tastespotting and thought how wonderful and colorful. What a way to brighten up the senses with all these colors beaming in front of you. I do eat a lot of sushi here and am not the greatest at creating that perfect roll. So I found this much easier. Plus you can add whatever you fancy, no matter the size. Right now I'm going through an avocado craving--so far lasting now into two weeks, and as I type this I want to make another sushi bowl with fresh uni. Oh that sounds so good. Finding fresh uni on cape cod is hard, you wouldn't think so since cape cod is on the ocean. But it is. The last place I had really fresh and tasty uni was in NYC. What would you add to your sushi bowl? I love to hear what type of sushi others love-I'm always up for trying new sushi.

How to assemble this sushi bowl?

sticky rice studded with toasted seseame seeds
sliced avocados
finely shredded carrots
raw salmon (or hamachi, uni mmm uni!)
pickled ginger (I ate way more ginger that what is shown)
wasabi
(not pictured soy sauce and chopsticks)
feel free to add whatever you fancy

I'm on facebook! Come join my vanilla sugar fan club won't you?

  1. That looks very colorful and healthy, it's lovely. I would add seasoned crab and slices of mango to mine. They would also probably be great additions to this bowl already.

  3. I have yet to try sushi. I was actually just talking to a buddy of mine about it, he insists I'll like it. Heh, when I get it for the first time I'll be sure to take pictures.

  4. I'd add some julienned nori (seaweed) strips, for color and crunch, because I always have some nori in my pantry.

  5. Nice colors, composition... but is that smoked salmon? If it is, you can't call it sushi, bowl or no bowl ;)

Btw, I think the reason why you can't get Uni in Cape Caaaaad is because the water is too cold.

Where I grew up (Indonesia), I used to see Uni and sea cucumber while swimming around. Uni always scares me, because if you happen to step on it (they tend to gather by shoreline) your feet will get swollen, like being stung by 50 bees...

  10. Looks great!! I love Japanese food and sushi is my favourite part of the Japanese food experience. How about adding some toasted panko crumbs on top for some crunch? Black sesame seeds would look pretty too. I must give uni a try soon!

  17. That bowl is so colorful! Fabulous photo. It's embarrassing to admit, but I don't like sushi. I want to like it because I love seafood, but the texture gets to me every time.

  20. A little drizzle of sesame oil, sriracha, and lots of wasabi would be great. Plus, there needs to be a little tuna and crab. Just a little!

  21. Oh, yes! If I can get sushi w/o mutilating a poor sheet of nori, then I'll jump in the bowl! This looks wonderful - where do you get your raw salmon? Being so far from either coast, I'm not sure about finding good quality (much less at a reasonable price). But then again, I only need a bit as this has so much other good stuff, too!
