the best veggie calzone, ever

Get out a pen and paper, I'll wait.... Go ahead, go get them because you're going to need to write this down. The next time you go to Whole Foods, do not leave the store without picking up a couple batches of their multi-grain pizza dough. This is the best pizza dough I've ever had the pleasure of working with. I am not one of those people who likes to make their own pizza dough. Why? Well, I have a 55 sq. ft. kitchen and an oven that "sometimes" works. So, until we move into a better kitchen I'm not chancing all that hard work of bread & pizza dough making and then baking it, sitting by my untrusty oven with crossed fingers. I had this same problem when I attempted cheesecake :::shudder:::
But, let's go back to this multi-grain pizza dough from Whole Foods. The texture, the taste, the ease of forming it was a breeeeeeze people. You know how some pizza doughs you buy from the store are just awful; there is no stretching those dry puffs of dough or if you do they just rip. And don't get me started on the taste. This multi-grain pizza dough had such an incredible taste and texture (plus it did very well when freezing for later). Let's not forget that it's multi-grain and that means it's good for you. I had been craving one of my calzones for some time now and wanted to try a veggie version.

All I did was saute one red, orange, and green bell pepper, one small onion with olive oil and salt & pepper. When it was just about done sauteeing I added in a couple splashes of Worcheshire sauce. Then added in a few marinated mushrooms from a jar, toss well, set to the side. Roll out pizza dough into a circle, cut in half. Fill with sauteed veggies, top with a bit of mozzarella cheese or whatever you fancy. Seal up dough very well. Poke a couple holes on top of calzones for steam to escape, rub some olive oil on top of the calzone (make sure you get the olive oil all over the crust too! that's the best part!) and top with some sharp cheddar. Bake in 450 degree oven for 10-15 minutes, depending on your oven. Let them cool a bit before biting into them because these babies are HOT! I loved these so much I ate my leftover half cold for lunch, oh yeah, I could not wait to heat it up, I was that impatient--it was delish cold.

Look at the crust! Is that not perfection? And this is multi-grain dough people! You have to try this, you will love it, trust me.

I could not pass the chance to introduce you all to the newest part of my friends' family. This is Anderson. Yes, he is a King Cavalier. And he is the most precious puppy I've come across in ages. I'm the lucky one that gets to watch him from time to time. Look at that face! Do you know how hard it is to kiss that face when all he wants to do is play? Impossible, but I'm still working on it!

  1. We always make our own dough so I haven't tried Whole Foods dough, but I am going to now since you give it rave reviews! I love stuffing my calzones with TONS of veggies. I really wish I had this for lunch today. And that puppy is beyond cute!

  2. My philopshy is someone else has perfected it why not just use theirs. Unfortunately we lack a Whole Foods so I usually make my own.

That crust looks amazing and calzones are one of my favorite guys coming over poker dinner. Everyone can have what they want and they are grillable too.

Great flavors and going to have to try it with the olive oil and cheddar combo. I normally do the butter and parmesan route.

  4. Oh....oh....oh....to the calzone AND the puppy! I'm a sucker for BOTH!!!
Darn it-we don't have a Whole Foods Market up this way! That's OK....I'll follow your lead with my homemade pizza dough.
Lucky you puppysitting that cutie....I'd be wanting puppy kisses too!!! :)

  6. This is good to know! Looks like you truly stand by the product. :) We've been using Trader Joe's dough for a while now, so if we need to do a taste test, this is worth it.

  7. This looks absolutely scrumptious! And I love, love, love the puppy!

  8. I usually make my pizza dough, takes 2 min. in the Food Processor. But next time I'm around Whole Foods I want to try it. You did such a beautiful calzone.

    What a cute puppy.

  9. I'm gonna try that calzone..that crust looks Heavenly and OH MY GAWD...Anderson is ADORABLE!!!!! You know, I've never seen a baby King Charles before. Oooh, I just want to kiss him all over and squeeze him tight! What a sweet face!! :)

  10. What a sweet puppy and I love his name! I need to make a little trek to the nearest whole foods to check out the pizza dough as I have not been impressed with any of the ones I have found in store lately. Sometimes I am just too lazy to make homemade. Calzones are just a little bit of perfect in life, don't you think? They look amazing, as usual.

  11. Yum, I will definitely be trying this soon!

Also, Anderson is such a cutie! We just adopted a King Charles/Shih Tzu mix who was rescued from a bad breeder. I think King Charles Spaniels really have the cutest, sweetest little faces. :)

  16. Awww, Anderson is so precious!! Okay, so, Todd and I don't have a car. Yes, we're hippie like that--I mean, we do live in Berkeley. (Okay, in all honesty, we just can't afford to park a car anywhere in this city :) ). But, I'm totally going to walk to Whole Foods, which is about 3 or so miles away because you have given me the meanest craving for a veggie calzone, and I want the best pizza dough possible! It'll be great though--by the time I get home, I'll totally be able to eat like 5 calzones without any guilt :) Your calzones look suuuuper yummy, Dawn!

  17. Puppy! Ahem, scuse me.

That calzone looks awesome, I love calzones. I don't ever get to get to WF, unfortunately, but I can try out the rest of it. I finally got a new oven that works all the time, so I don't have to worry about baking disasters anymore. Well, at least, not ones that I can blame the oven for...

  18. Your puppy is such a cutie! Nice calzone too.

  19. OMG!! Anderson is soooo adorable!!!! I so want a puppy right now.

Whole Foods, eh? I may just have to make a run over there just to pick some of this dough you speak of and only that.

  20. One thing I really miss about New Orleans is Whole Foods. They started out in this little hole in the wall place in the mid 80's and I was hooked way back then.

I will have to make my own dough, but man the veegies are awesome and adding the Lea & Perrins, well I'm just a Lea & Perrins kind of a girl.

The puppy is the cutest dog I have ever seen...he's definitely got a kissable face.

  21. Oh, oceans separate me and Whole Foods :( I guess I'll have to make do with whatever we have here-- including my handmade though. I've never attempted calzone-making before, though. Yours looks beyoootiful!

  28. That is a sweet puppy Dawn! You are going to have fun watching him!!!

I would love to try this pizza dough from Whole Foods. I usually make my own, but if you say it is good, I am gonna try it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm not a huge fan of calzones (I don't like my pizza wrapped), but your veggie version might be just the thing to convert me. Looks really yummy!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Please send either the calzone or the pup over, please?

    ReplyDelete

  41. Oh yes! You were so right - I needed to visit you to get me back in the mood.

I'm ready to vote that as the best calzone ever! You could win a contest with that kind of yum - but that could be said any day in your kitchen. I hope you really do get that bakery - and soon.

I wish there was a Whole Foods store on Cape! But I don't mind making my own dough - and I love to play in the dirt. Love it!

To catch up: bacon in pound cake? bacon? You are so brave.

I grew up in upstate New York and one of my fav childhood sandwiches was cheese, tomato and mayo. So I'm gonna make that tart. Soon!

That is one of the cutest puppies I've ever seen! Seriously, all puppies are sweet, but that one could have a career in pictures.

Thank you for keeping in touch when I went underground...
