first snow

Our first snow of 2008. It started early this morning and has been snowing all day, it's now 4pm and still light snow. This is the kind of snow that is light, wet and not sticking (yeah). As much as I hate winter and dream of summer, I have to admit it did look pretty outside with the light snow falling and gently covering everything white outside. I decided to let the pictures share with you what I saw today on my walks. Very pretty on a cold almost too dark day in winter at 2pm. (click on any picture to enlarge)

my front/side door--just thought this pic was too cool to pass up

my side yard under the old trellis--can you see the rose vine?
so pretty in the spring when it's in full bloom.

my backyard. something about the blanket of snow that makes everything so clean & fresh. see that bottle to the right? that's a bottle of Prosecco we shared one late August night when the temp. was 80 degrees at 7pm. I remember vividly the crickets that would sound-surround our house with croaking all night long; I loved that intensity.

my front yard, my neighbors to the left and straight ahead is our barn/garage. can you see the church tower on the left in the back? many decades ago that was a church; it later became a museum, then an antique shop, a doll museum, B&B and now it's owned by some very wealthy couple that bought it, gutted it, fixed the tower, added in stained glass windows, only to live there a few times a year. I saw the inside when it was a B&B and it was very cool; think gothic inside with a lot of light, stained glass windows and all open rooms, even the bathrooms (like a giant loft in SoHo).

those stained glass windows look wonderful when the sun is out.

the front of the above remodeled old church/now a home.

these are my neighbors to my right of my house. I loved this pic because in the summer this street is lined with tourist cars & tourist walking about...just seems like such a ghost town (which I love).

the street on which that other blue church sits, down the road a bit another church.
this one is a functioning church.

we have a lot of churches in this area.

I just loved this pic, sidewalk on main street in front of the church.

down the road from the above pic, our old Town Hall, still functioning in a way for meetings and the like, but the main town hall moved down the street to a move energy efficient building. aren't those columns cool though? hard to tell from this pic, but the building is really tall.

across from the Town Hall are these old fences over-looking the brook that feeds to the marsh.

Tiki checking out the falling snow.

then sitting in front of the heating vent in the hall

decides he prefers the heating vent by my desk.

this is why I'm always so cold! he covers the whole vent!

  1. Dawn, I am so loving this pictures. Your neighborhood is so cute and "east coast". I really think this kind of weather really makes it feel like the holidays. Not the hot hot heat that we're expecting in a couple of days. Thanks for sharing!

  4. What a wonderful place you live in. I am jealous of the neighbors house as well but that must drive you all nuts when the streets are lined with tourists! I wish it would snow here. All of your pics are breathtaking, Dawn. If you want to come warm up, you are welcome to come out my way and I will even let you have your own heater vent!

  5. Up here in the snow belt of northern Rhode Island, we have our first several inches of snow and ice today. Ugh.

  6. Your photo collection is so wonderful! It feels so "northern" and like home to me. I miss that part sometimes, then I remember ALL the snow and then I'm ok with just visiting and checking out your pics. Love the cat on the vent. My kids do that. sigh.

  8. You live in such a beautiful area. I love the churches, but I can't imagine living in one.

    You cat is too funny.

  9. I was SO excited by our first snow! Unlike you, I adore the stuff and in my opinion a sprinkling doesn't do it. I want feet.

Your photos are beautiful and I recognize some landmarks.

Tiki looks alot like my dear Sassy who disappeared a few years ago. Same markings only longer hair.

Now we just have a very sweet, very fat calico.

You've been cooking up a storm! Good to catch up...

  11. Your pictures are beautiful. Your area has such personality. We got a snow like that Saturday midday, right when I wanted to go to the grocery. It lightly blanketed the lawns and roofs.

  15. Everything looks so beautiful with just a light sprinkling of snow. I guess I can say that since I live in Los Angeles and I'll never have a snowy winter here. Stay warm!

  16. I was hoping you would have a sunny and warm weekend. At least the snow is pretty. The photos are excellent...your town reminds me of my home town. The church/home is fantastic - it's too bad they don't live there full time.

  23. Loved the tour of your neighborhood! Very quaint and pretty. We have not had snow yet and my kids keep pestering me for snow, as if I am in charge of making that too! Looks like hot cocoa time for you!

  24. i enjoy snow...when it's white and pristine and pure and i can safely view it from afar. brown and sludgy and blocking my road to work (or worse, to my apartment)? no thanks. :)

  29. It seems so novel to see snow now that I live in California. I'll be in for a treat come Christmas when I travel back home to the midwest!

  30. I always love and dread the first snowfall of the year. Perfect because it is beautiful but then it is a realization that I have to get the snowblower working or find a shovel.

Nice to see I don't have the only cat who likes to pray to the furnace god.

  33. Thanks for sharing the pics! About the sliders...I mostly use the small rolls that come in the aluminum pans. I love this recipe! I could eat the whole pan-full. Take Care, Tona

  34. I was looking at your pictures and thought it looked like Mass. My husband is from Millis,Mass. I am from Oklahoma, where we live. I so wish that Oklahoma was like New England--i love the way the churches and homes look there, but most of all I love ALL the trees!

  35. So beautiful. We just got our first snow today (3 inches and sticking). I'm hoping I don't have to work tomorrow. :) Tiki is so cute!

  36. Ahahah! I also got that first snow!!! Cool pictures, thanks for sharing your street. That ex church house is pretty cool!

  37. The buildings are beautiful!

My cat Nelson, who has the same coloring/markings as Tiki, is a vent sleeper too. He loves when the heavy curtains cover over the vent and he gets a little tent. Then he really can hog all he hot air!
